Indonesia Peat Fires May Fuel Global Warming, Experts Say

As they have every dry season for the last 20 years, once lush tropical peatlands in Indonesia smoldered for weeks this year, leaving the region cloaked in a thick, carbon-rich haze.

The rainy season arrived at the end of October, squelching the flames. Even so, Jack Rieley, a peatland ecologist at the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, had no time to sigh in relief. With the rains come the floods.

"Another downside is the peatlands are losing their water-retention potential," he said. "Surrounding areas, especially those downstream, tend to flood quicker now."

The downsides, according to Rieley, result from the vast chunks of Indonesia's peatlands that have been burned, logged, drained, and left vulnerable to fire. It's all part of an effort to feed a burgeoning population of more than 210 million people and jump-start an ailing economy.

Tropical peatlands consist of layer upon layer of forest debris too wet to decompose. They cover approximately 50 million acres (20 million hectares) in Indonesia, or nearly 11 percent of the country's total land area. Key areas of peatland burning include Borneo, Sumatra, and West Papua.

Rieley is the co-leader of an international project that has studied the ecology of the peatland in the province of Central Kalimantan in Borneo since 1993.

Scientists know that these peatlands serve as gigantic stores of carbon. They have accumulated woody debris for millennia, locking it up in soggy piles that in places reach 66 feet (20 meters) deep.

Now that the peatlands regularly burn, Rieley and his colleagues say these carbon stores have become carbon sources. They're rapidly increasing atmospheric concentrations of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2), potentially spurring global warming.

"I am a peatland expert, not a climate one," Rieley said. "What I do know, however, is that tropical peatlands are releasing a very large amount of carbon from [storage] that is likely to be contributing to the accelerating increase in CO2 in the atmosphere."

"If other experts believe that this higher level of CO2 is propelling global warming, then of course tropical peatlands are part of that," he added.
Larry Smith is an associate professor of geography at the University of California, Los Angeles, who studies the vast peatlands in Siberia. He said scientists are just now beginning to understand the role peatlands play in the regulation of greenhouse gases.

Healthy peatlands absorb carbon dioxide as new vegetation grows, serving as a carbon sink. But microbes that thrive in these oxygen-poor, soggy environments slowly and incompletely decompose the plant material, causing peat to accumulate over time.
"A primary product of anaerobic [oxygen-poor] decomposition by microbes is methane," Smith said. "As [the peat] is decomposed, some carbon is released as methane rather than carbon dioxide."

Calculations on how much carbon peatlands store show that most of the world's peatlands are "slight sinks to neutral in terms of their net carbon balance," Smith said.

He and his colleagues are now trying to tease out the details of where the balance for Siberian peatlands teeters—from being a slight carbon sink or neutral to a source of carbon. Preliminary calculations suggest peatland could become carbon generators if global temperatures continue to rise, drying out the peatlands.

According to Rieley and his colleagues, the balance has already swung in Indonesia. Historically, tropical peat bogs have absorbed carbon at much faster rates than the peatlands in more northern latitudes.

"They are obviously of great importance in the global carbon cycle," Rieley said. "This role is now being destroyed by inappropriate land use and fire that has changed tropical peat bogs from sinks into sources of carbon."

Mega Rice Project

For decades Indonesia's peatlands have been burned and drained to make room for agriculture and settlements, but in 1995 the pace of destruction quickened with former dictator Suharto's Mega Rice Project.

The project was intended to turn Central Kalimantan into the country's rice bowl by logging and draining approximately 2.5 million acres (1 million hectares) of peatland and planting it with rice.

For two years workers cleared the forests and dug some 2,900 miles (4,600 kilometers) of canals, some as wide as 100 feet (30 meters). The canals were to keep the soil drained in the rainy season and crops irrigated in the dry season.

But the plan backfired. The peatlands are raised above the adjacent rivers, so the constructed canals only sucked the peatlands dry. Then in 1997 the El NiƱo weather phenomenon brought a severe, eight-month drought to the region. The high and dry peatlands went up in flames.

Rieley set out to measure the carbon released by the fires. He was joined by colleagues Florian Siegert of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, Germany, and Susan Page of the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom. The team used a combination of satellite imagery and ground measurements to estimate that the 1997 peat and forest fires released between 0.87 and 2.57 billion tons of carbon into the atmosphere.

"Undoubtedly these fires and associated carbon loss from degrading peat converted to agriculture and settlement are contributors to the accelerating increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations," Rieley said.

The team's original report appeared in the science journal Nature in 2002. In today's issue (November 11, 2004) of the journal, a news feature investigates the current crisis and the conservation community's attempts to bring the peatlands back to life.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Rieley and colleagues called on political leaders and international aid organizations for support in their efforts to save the Indonesian peatlands.

Mengenal Efek Rumah Kaca

Can a Recession Save Us From Global Warming?

As President Obama's stimulus package makes its way into law I am surprised and delighted how much is being made of alternative power technology. Has it taken a recession to change the direction of power technology?

It is insightful to use the big negative to promote a new future. Economically things are getting very bad. There doesn't seem to be much that can be done about that except try to cushion the bottom. But when the bounce comes do we continue the same old way, or do we do we go in another direction.

When things are good there is reluctance to change. Why give up the good life? But when rock bottom comes there is always a new direction in recovery. It is like the alcoholic who refuses to confront his/her demons until there is no other choice, and then can choose a new way of life or alcoholic poisoning.

Our reliance on oil is one of the factors involved with the present crisis, along with greed and other factors. What would the present situation be like if we had a secure source of cheap energy totally independent of economics?

One of the things often overlooked is that while it is going to take a lot of resources to get alternative/renewable power going, once it is it would only require periodic maintenance. A wind farm will continue to produce power while the wind blows independent of oil prices, Wall Street or interest rates. It would eliminate so many factors from the economic equation that it is doubtful if such a crisis as the one we face now could ever occur again.

How good would it be if our factories had reliable cheep power without any tie to world oil prices? What would our balance of payments look like without importing any energy? How good would it be to plug your car in to continuous renewable power to be charged overnight? Imagine never having to stop at a gas station again.

Up until now the emphasis has been on the arguments about whether or not global warming is real and the economic cost. Forget the economic cost. What was the economic cost of the sub-prime market? Our economies are on there knees. It will take as much to rebuild the same old way as to rebuild with renewable energy.

The emphasis of starting again with new technologies won't cost jobs, it will create them. Technology always changes available jogs. Look at all the jobs that have gone since the introduction of the automobile, or the computer. Many jobs just no longer exist, but they have been replaced with new jobs. The power station workers will no longer shovel coal, but there will be new jobs with the new technologies.

The economic crisis is hurting the whole world. Many people (including myself) are suffering because of it. But maybe if we can work together to bring about a change in direction the rest of our lives can be secure, and future generations will thank us for our courage in changing the course of technology.

The key to greater achievements, and the elimination of negatives like war, greed , poverty and oppression (to name a few) is for people to make informed choices based on understanding instead of just leaving it to the experts to tell us what to think.
Much of David's work involves looking at issues and translating them into plain language. If the expert spoke in plain language we would understand that the experts know no more than we do. We are both spiritual and physical beings. The two must go together if we are to be complete in this world. When writing on spiritual subjects this is always tempered with bringing our spiritual being into the world. If one or the other is neglected we suffer. These are the twin motivators of my work. Physical well being and understanding issues so that we have choices, and making those choices from a spiritual base of knowing who we are.

Carbon Dioxide Emissions Cause Global Warming

Since time in memoriam, man, in his struggle to survive has used his superior intellect to create the necessary tools to sustain his very existence. Whatever man saw a need for, man created. From the stone axe to the 21st century we have taken from this earth without regard. Have we made a better life for ourselves? In many ways, yes we have, in others, not so much.

Right now the world is in crises. Global Warming is causing our polar ice caps to melt at an accelerated rate and our oceans are rising. We are seeing more horrific weather than anytime in recorded history. We have some people telling us to cut back as they climb into their private jet and leave a carbon footprint in one trip that it would take an average person a year to make. Ah yes, hypocrisy at its finest.

The facts are before us and the undeniable proof is there. The proverbial "handwriting is on the wall." All we have to do is read it and take the necessary steps to stem the advance of "Global Warming."

We, as individuals, have got to do our part. One person cannot by himself or herself accomplish what is necessary to make much of a dent, but as a collective body, we can start to reverse the damage we have caused. We do this by taking small steps starting with taking a look at what our own personal carbon footprint is and what impact it is having on the planet as a whole.

The answer is simple. The average person does not, in and of himself, leave much of an impact on our environment. However, with that being said, it will take that individual and millions of others to save this planet from ourselves. This cannot be done without the first individual grasping whatever opportunities that may be presented that will lessen his or her negative impact on the earth.

An example would be our use of the beloved automobile. What an invention! The vast majority of people in the United States, as well as many other countries, would not be able to live comfortable lives without the automobile. Of course with the automobile, comes the combustion engine. Therein lies the root of the problem. The emissions put out by these engines is CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) and it is taking its toll on our planet.

A study completed by Environmental Defense has determined that U.S. automobiles and light trucks are responsible for nearly half of all greenhouse gases emitted by automobiles globally. In 2004, carbon dioxide from personal vehicles in the United States equaled 314 million metric tons. Those figures have continued to spiral upwards and out of control. We must slow this down for our own sakes and that of future generations.

How do we, as individuals, make a difference? Of course, driving less would work but that is not always viable. Therefore, there must be other ways to make an impact. Bear in mind that one gallon of gasoline equals 20 pounds of CO2 and that an average gasoline tank is around 20 gallons. If you saved 10% on your fuel usage you would save 2 gallons of gas per tank and that would equal 40 pounds of CO2 emissions. If you burn one tank of gas per week, without changing your driving habits, in one year's time you would save 2,080 pounds of CO2. That is close to one metric ton all by yourself. Not to mention the financial consideration. If you save 104 gallons of gas per year at $2.50 per gallon you will keep $260.00 in your pocket and lessen our dependence on foreign oil. Your financial savings will be more because if you think gas prices are not going to increase you are kidding yourself.

Now, if you are determined to help solve the global warming problem and not just sit back and wait for others, then visit GreenQuest Corporation. You must take the first step, then grab your neighbors, family members, and friends and let's just see how many tons of CO2 emissions we can eliminate. Everybody wins.
